STG 118: Teaching Guitar In A Commodity Market

word of mouth referrals The hardest way to teach guitar lessons is when you teach in a commodity market. If your lessons are basically no different than the lessons offered by every other teacher in town, there’s really no reason for potential students to choose you over anyone else except one: price. Unless you understand how to keep this from happening, it’s easy to get trapped in a “race to the bottom” where nobody wins. The secret to winning this depressing game is to not play it at all.

In this episode, I’ll explain exactly what it means to be teaching guitar in a commodity market and why this is the LAST thing you want to be doing if you want a successful teaching studio. I’ll tell you all the downsides that come with competing based on price, and then I’ll give you some practical tips on how to rise above your competition and compete on a completely new playing field. It takes courage to succeed as a guitar teacher, and success is rarely ever easy – but if you can elevate yourself and your studio above the “commodity” level, you can be more successful than everyone else in your local market.
